Young Britons 'considering moving abroad for careers'
02 July 2011
Return to index
The rising cost of living in the UK is prompting young people in the UK to look overseas for career opportunities, it has been claimed.
According to the online editor of Eurograduate, inflation rates are encouraging graduates to move abroad for jobs, as in other countries "working hours and work ethic are often different and the quality of life is seen to be better".
Atiyah Wazir-Meadows explained that the labor migration trend is also being prompted by the relatively long working hours in the UK, which the expert explained are "amongst the longest in the EU".
However, she noted that certain sectors still provide strong employment opportunities for British graduates, such as the technology and science industries.
Ms Atiyah Wazir-Meadows was commenting after the GfK International Employee Engagement Study showed 38 per cent of those with degrees in the UK would consider going overseas to secure better jobs, with younger people holding postgraduate qualifications most likely to think about moving abroad for their careers.
