UK 'underutilization' of staff contributing to skills shortages

29 October 2011
UK 'underutilization' of staff contributing to skills shortagesMany members of staff in the UK are not being used effectively and this is leading to skills shortages in many areas.

This is the claim made by a new report, which has suggested more needs to be done by organizations in the country to identify and utilize the talent and experience in their workforces.

According to the study by Randstad UK, some companies are not aware of what makes them attractive to people seeking employment.

In its World of Work report, the company points out that 44 per cent of workers believe their skills are not being fully used, while many businesses continue to complain about talent gaps and their effect on innovation and growth.

"We urge organisations to take a fresh look at their staff, not only to unearth and utilise hidden skills, but also to fully understand and respond to their motivators," commented Randstad UK chief executive Mark Bull.

Randstad recently backed a report by the Ciett (the International Confederation of Private Employment Agencies) and The Boston Consultancy Group, which estimated that there were 900,000 new positions created in Europe over the past two years as a result of the agency work industry, many in nations that have undergone labor market reform.
