January witnesses strong rise in Wall Street finance jobsThe number of jobs on Wall Street in New York climbed substantially in January 2011, new figures reveal.

Individuals seeking finance jobs in the US may be interested to learn that data from the NYS Labor Department has indicated a 5.9 per cent climb year-on-year in roles in the financial heart of the country, the Wall Street Journal reports.

There were increases both in the investment banking and securities brokerage fields over the period in question, pushing Wall Street to its highest monthly jobs total in two years, at 169,100 professionals.

According to the Labor Department figures for New York State, the private sector job count expanded by 0.2 per cent during 2010, with a total of 95,100 roles added over the 12 months to December.

Highest gains were seen in the education and health services industry, which added 39,000 posts in a year, followed by leisure and hospitality (20,300) and accommodation and food services (20,800).

"Our state’s economy outperformed the nation with stronger job growth and a lower unemployment rate in 2010," the bureau's Rod Fortran said.
