IT skills shortages 'create demand for experienced staff'

IT skills shortages 'create demand for experienced staff'High levels of demand are being seen for those with strong skills in IT, it has been claimed.

As a result of the need for experienced workers to fill vacant posts, the Association of Professional Staffing Companies (APSCo) has stated that wages are rising rapidly in the field.

The organization reported that despite slow levels of economic growth, positions for individuals with computing talents are particularly sought after by companies.

"In many highly skilled sectors of the economy, such as IT, it is incredibly hard to source certain skills from within the UK," chief executive Ann Swain commented, adding that some firms are taking as many as six months to find the right candidates for IT jobs in the UK.

In addition, APSCo noted permanent vacancies for highly skilled professional workers rose by seven per cent during the year to April 2011, outpacing a four per cent increase across all roles.

Latest official data for the UK's labor market from the Office for National Statistics has shown that the number of individuals in work increased by 50,000 between March and May 2011 to 29.28 million.
