Indian mining sector 'suffering skills shortages'
17 March 2011
Return to index
There are not enough trained professionals available to meet demand within the Indian mining sector, one organization has declared.
According to the Confederation of Indian
Industry
(CII), a shortfall in experienced staff of up to 2,200 could be felt within the next ten years, with major concerns about areas such as legal and finance jobs as well mining-specific posts, the Business Standard reports.
Those seeking
engineering jobs
in India may be interested in the body's claim that the mining
industry
is responsible for around three per cent of the nation's total gross domestic product and has a total workforce of 900,000.
A CII statement said coal is responsible for around 75 per cent of employees in the sector, with 86 different minerals produced across India.
In related news, the Australian government has announced plans to make it easier for mining companies to appoint experienced staff from overseas for large-scale projects and fast-track apprentices as the talent gap in the sector widens.
