Incentives needed 'to address Irish IT skills shortages'

16 July 2011
Incentives needed 'to address Irish IT skills shortages'There is growing demand for experienced technical professionals in Ireland that needs to be met in order for the economy to flourish, it has been claimed.

According to the Irish Internet Association, the government should put incentives in place to encourage labor migration to the country in order to fill an estimated 2,500 vacant positions, the Irish Times reports.

The identified roles are in the gaming, IT and communications industries and the Critical Skills Retention and Development report calls for social insurance deductions, repatriation grants and tax credits to be put in place to encourage employees to meet the talent gap.

Joan Mulvihill, chief executive of the organization, told the news source: "We are in crisis mode and this is about investing in a wealth generating sector."

The association also wants greater incentives for students to take technology courses at university and more done to help small businesses and start-ups to find staff.

A recent report by the UK's Association of Professional Staffing Companies suggested that levels of demand are high for those with IT skills.
