Hong Kong records fall in joblessness

20 April 2011
Hong Kong records fall in joblessnessThe number of people out of work in Hong Kong dropped during the first quarter of the year, new figures show.

Unemployment in the special administrative regions (SAR) of China fell over the three months to March by 0.2 points to 3.4 per cent.

Those seeking finance jobs in China may be interested that joblessness now stands at its lowest rate since the global economic crisis.

Unemployment declined from 3.6 per cent during the quarter to February 2011, the Census and Statistics Department reported, a better result than economists polled by Dow Jones Newswires had predicted.

Labor secretary for Hong Kong Matthew Cheung remarked: "In view of the still strong economic performance and positive hiring sentiment in the corporate sector, the unemployment rate is likely to remain at low levels in the near term."

Meanwhile, further finance jobs could be created in the SAR following talks between the chief executive of Hong Kong Donald Tsang and Dmitry Medvedev, president of Russia, intended to increase business and economic ties between the two jurisdictions.
