African respite from skills shortages 'at an end'

28 November 2011
African respite from skills shortages 'at an end'The brief respite from shortages of skilled employees provided by the global economic downturn has now come to an end, an expert has declared.

This is according to Business Live, which quoted Sandra Burmeister, chief executive of the Landelahni Recruitment Group, as stating that the talent gap on the continent is likely to increase.

She told the news source that a "brain drain" is seeing many qualified Africans moving overseas and rising investment in the continent pushing up skills shortages in areas such as engineering, IT, mining, oil and gas in particular.

Ms Burmeister stated that migrants around the world are contributing towards the nations they work in, adding: "If we can increase the graduation rate, we can increase the supply of skills."

Business Live also noted recently that economists at the recent Bureau of Economic Research conference in South Africa claimed a second recession in Europe is unlikely to have as significant an effect on the nation as the downturn three years ago.
